Good Morning!

We have a little snow on the forecast for today in Falmouth!  Flurries should be seen starting around noon today, and continue til this evening.  Rain will mix with the snow at dinner time so the snow will become a slushy mix.  Looks like we will only get about one inch, and once the rain washes it away there may be no remnants by tomorrow!

The Lanes: Bowl & Bistro

Looking for something to do on a cold winter day, or maybe it’s just rainy?- Look no further!  The Mashpee Commons has a new venue called The Lanes, it is a bistro and bowling alley in one!  During the day children are welcome, however after 9pm The Lanes turns into a 21+ venue, offering alcohol and even musical entertainment!  They offer wines, beers and mixed drinks which is nice for the adults who want to enjoy a casual drink while bowling.  I went early in the evening with friends and although their were many adults who were drinking, it was no issue for the folks with kids there.  The management has done a great job keeping up with that no doubt.  When you walk in there is a bar and dining area where you can also wait to bowl.  They have large flat screen TV’s showing the waitlist for bowling so you can keep up with your placement.  If it’s quiet then no worries there will be no wait.  Up a few stairs is the bowling alley and more tables to wait or eat at.  They offer a good amount of lanes, I think maybe 10.  They can put bumpers up for the kids as well.  The menu seems to have a nice variety to it, but definitely has options coinciding with the “bistro” aspect of the name.  I tried their fried pickles which were great, and ended with their mini cannoli’s that were just the right size to share and quench my sweet tooth!  This place seems to have it all, take a look at their website for more information: http://lanesbowlandbistro.com/

The Glass Onion

Good Morning All,

I went out to dinner the other night with my family to celebrate my parent’s anniversary and we opted for an elegant evening of gourmet food from The Glass Onion.  They are a fairly new restaurant in the area, and are located on Palmer Avenue across from the Inn on the Square in Falmouth’s historic Queen’s Buyway.  Parking is hidden behind; in the off-season there are plenty of spots however come summer, you may have to park across the street by Corner Cycle.  The dress code is casual, they say you can wear jeans- and we did see some folks as casual as that, although you may feel under-dressed in that attire there.  The feel is more up-scale.  Currently they are open Tues-Sat  beginning at 5pm.  They have kept some of the historic charm of the building without looking cheap or unfinished.  The decor is beautiful.  Our waitress was pleasantly attentive and polite.  We were served compimentary a small plate of pate, and after warm bread and butter.  We ordered and received our food in a timely manner.  I chose a dish off the specials menu; filet mignon with bleu cheese baked on top and black grapes decorated the edge with potatoes and asparagus to enjoy with.  My brother chose a lamb dish featured on the menu, and thought when he received his food he may be hungry after but he was pleasantly surprised that his hunger was suppressed before he was finished with his meal.  The moral of that being the servings are deceivingly filling.  We were all in agreement that our meals were delicious!  The owner and the manager found out we were celebrating my parent’s anniversary and sent our some complimentary desserts which was very much appreciated!  The whole experience at The Glass Onion was memorable and I would highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions or just to enjoy a delicious gourmet meal.  They are somewhat pricey, however you certainly get what you pay for, and it is totally worth it!  Take a look at their menu at: http://www.theglassoniondining.com/The_Glass_Onion/Home.html.  Please be warned they do not take reservations for parties less 5 or 6 people, but they have a good amount of seating in the restaurant.

The Woods Hole Public Library is delighted to offer a Robert Wyatt performance at a private home on Penzance Point. The second in the Library’s winter concert series, on this occasion in the more intimate atmosphere of a private home, his program offers an inspiring start to the New Year. Pianist Robert Wyatt will present a program of his favorite composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. Considered to be the “father of music,” Bach not only excelled in composition but also masterminded a host of theoretical properties which allowed future composers to advance their own ideas. The most versatile of geniuses, Bach was a fine organist, a loving husband and father, and a creative thinker whose interests were boundless. More information regarding the concert location is available by calling the Library at 508-548-8961, during its regular hours of operation. Tickets cost $25 and are limited in number. They may be purchased at Eight Cousins, the Bank of Woods Hole, and at the Woods Hole Public Library. Robert Wyatt enthusiasts will not be disappointed to hear this highly regarded artist in a unique location.

All materials are provided, and participants take home four to six (6oz.) jars of finished product. Fee is $40 and paid advance registration is required for all jam workshops.  Participants will be making Cherry Apricot Jam.
