The West Falmouth Library, 575 West Falmouth Highway, will offer a “Mostly Strings” concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, featuring local musicians Bill Black and John Yankee. The evening will be devoted to traditional and contemporary ballads and songs performed on a variety of instruments, including banjo, octave mandolin, hammered dulcimer, piano and more.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students and will be available in advance at the library during library hours or at the door. Proceeds will benefit community events at the library and the musicians.
Mr. Black specializes in the Irish traditional genre, and has composed many dance tunes and songs that are well-regarded by traditional performers. He leads traditional sessions in Hyannis, and at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton. He is also a composer for string quartets, and under the inspiration of Tom Goux of the Greater Falmouth Mostly All-Male Men’s Chorus, where he was a charter member in choral arranging.
Mr. Yankee is the artistic director of the Falmouth Chorale, conductor of Falmouth Chamber Players Orchestra, director of music at John Wesley United Methodist Church and choral Director at Falmouth Academy. He was part of the Baltimore-based folk trio “Cross Country” which continues to do occasional reunion tours throughout the mid-Atlantic and New England. He also led the Celtic/Folk/Renaissance ensemble “Acoustic Medicine” out of Telluride, Colorado. Currently he plays with the Woods Hole Folk Orchestra and performs acoustic music both as a soloist and with colleagues.
